LITERATURE CIRCLES AND RESPONSE

Dr. Bonnie Campbell Hill will present ideas about literature-based instruction and literature circles. She will provide forms and ideas for organizing literature circles at various grade levels. She will then address issues of book selection and integrating literature with content areas. The focus for the second half of the presentation will be on how to encourage students to talk about books, write about books and respond through the visual and performing arts. Issues of assessment through anecdotal notes, self-evaluation forms and reading portfolios will all be addressed. The emphasis will be on practical ideas that have proven successful in K-8 classrooms.

Participants will receive an extensive packet of management and assessment forms that teachers will be able to immediately use in their classrooms.

In this workshop, participants will:

• explore the use of literature circles in the classroom
• understand the theoretical framework for response to literature
• increase their knowledge of children's literature and authors
• gain ideas for teaching reading strategies and comprehension through focus lessons
• explore ways to encourage in-depth discussions and written response to literature
• investigate ways to encourage response through the visual and performing arts
• become familiar with professional journal and resources about literature circles
